This is a fairly standard lineup of nominees for the Best Actor category. You have your veterans; Daniel Day-Lewis and Denzel Washington; your newcomers; Timothée Chalamet and Daniel Kaluuya; and finally the only one who has a shot at winning; Gary Oldman. There is not much point in discussing the possible choices, because Darkest Hour is exactly the sort of Oscar bait that guarantees a statue for its leading man. Academy voters absolutely love a transformation, especially when it involves a historical figure. Denzel Washington could be a serious contender, given that he also has quite the transformation, but Roman J. Israel, Esq. did not garner much critical acclaim during its release, taking him out of the running almost entirely. If you had told me Daniel Day-Lewis did not have a 100% chance of winning a Best Actor Oscar on his final film pre-retirement back when he announced his leave earlier last year, I would have thought the world has gone mad. However, Day-Lewis chose an ill time to retire from acting, as there is already another seasoned British man in the spotlight this year. As for the young new actors Chalamet and Kaluuya, I personally would love to see either of them win, as I have previously mentioned my affection for both Get Out and Call Me By Your Name, as well as the fresh perspectives their characters represent. Alas, there is not much speculation to be had, here, as Oldman has been the frontrunner since the first promotional pictures of that glorious fat suit.
Who will win: Gary Oldman
Who should win: No offense to Oldman, but literally anyone else.
